There are a button, at side seat heat buttons.
It works only when the lights are on.
Then you must push it.

There is no button. When the headlight is on and
you turn on the wipers, the headlight washer automatically turns
on.

Headlight washers come on automatically when the night driving lights are on and
you activate the front windshield washer. They are these 2 plastic square
covers on the bumper just beneath each of your headlights. You can also just
activate the headlight washer from a button located close to the heated seats
controls.

I find the washers extremely useful when driving in the winter. Before my RX, I
had the LX470 without headlight washer, and when driving in the winter, my
headlight would dim considerably after driving for a while in the winter from
all the mud/salt caking on the headlights.

I did not get as much as I wanted on the trade $34000 since the 450 is in such limited supply. From what I hear if you want anything more than the base model with all the normal goodies then you will be waiting. The heads up display will be available sometime in late August . The seat extensions, the LED headlights, the side camera, and other items will come on line at different times. Mine was equipped with everything that the RX400h had except headlight washers, I never used them.

Pat,

MPG differs - if you drive up hills - it eats up more gas as it is heavy...
Los Angeles where I live is pretty flat with occasional hills...

Like when my teenage son drives, it is 22-23mpg...
When I see stop sign or red traffic light... I let the car slow down by itself -
meaning use less brake...

I used to get 23-26 and now 26-28 that is 2-3mpg difference.. .

Headlight washers - what headlight washers? :-) I wouldn't know where to look
for them and I have had my 2007 400h for 2 1/2 years!

I took my RX to my dealer today for the 20,000 mile service - yes, I have 20,450
miles on an absolutely flawless car. I immediately put Weathertech mats
throughout and the original mats are still in a box in the attic.

I fell in love with the 2010 450h, or the interior of the 450h in particular.
It is so luxurious! And I love the way the new nav and toggle system works. My
salesman is on vacation and I will deal with no one but him, but I gave them the
word. He knows the color I want, etc. I'm definitely in the market if they
make the price right!

I didn't have time to test drive it but I am going back for that in the next
couple of weeks. I love the way my 400h drives, can't imagine it can get any
better.

Since 2005 when I got my first RX400 I may have used the headlight washer once or twice. I will not miss it at all. Mileage is staying in the low 30's and drivability is much smoother as if you could get much smoother. Braking is also much more linier.

The headlight washer button is just to the heated seat control on the small

vertical panel in front of the shift lever this is something I rarely if ever use.

I have 700 miles on a new RX450h. Some thoughts about the vehicle.
1; Milage is running between 31 and 34 mpg
2; The transmission no longer has the brake mode it is not needed
3; The seats are better than the RX400h's
4; The new control for the nav system is much better as are the voice comands
5; More rear storage space but less under the floor
6; overall a better vehicle

I feel that the RX450 is a large upgrade over the RX400 and especially the 06 RX400. Current RX450s have the same options as the RX400 except the headlight washer. From a drivabilty stand point the RX450 is much better.

I am currently driving a 2006 RX400h purchased new in June 2005 with

The selector lever allows discrete "gears" and displays a number
corresponding to the selection, but what does this mean with a
continuous variable transmission? The "brake mode" in our current
model is applicable at all speeds as it increases regenerative
braking, which recovers more kinetic energy and slows the vehicle on
downgrades. What happens in the new model when you select different
"gears"?

> 3; The seats are better than the RX400h's

No doubt, especially if you select the perforated leather with heating
and air conditioning option. We had that combination in a LS430 and
they were superb.

> 4; The new control for the nav system is much better as are the
> voice commands

Did you select any of the premium services, which are available by
subscription?

> 5; More rear storage space but less under the floor

I was dismayed to learn that they eliminated the storage area under
the rear floor that was intended for the cargo area shade! We use that
area routinely whenever we transport an item that will not fit
underneath the shade by storing the shade in that area. When the shade
is in use, we use that area for towels and other useful items that we
keep in the car. What do you do with the shade when it must be removed?

I understand that the rear suspension was significantly redesigned,
which may require more space underneath the car as there is now more
room for storage in the rear of the car, but at a price. In addition
to losing the storage area for the shade, the spare tire is only
accessible from within the storage area rather than from underneath
the vehicle. Have you confirmed that you have a regular, i.e., not a
compact spare tire mounted on an alloy road wheel rather than a
limited-use steel wheel?

> 6; overall a better vehicle

No doubt. Lexus made many changes in four years. Whether it is better
enough to warrant a trade-in is my dilemma. May we know what vehicle
you traded?

I did not get as much as I wanted on the trade $34000 since the 450 is in such limited supply. From what I hear if you want anything more than the base model with all the normal goodies then you will be waiting. The heads up display will be available sometime in late August . The seat extensions, the LED headlights, the side camera, and other items will come on line at different times. Mine was equipped with everything that the RX400h had except headlight washers, I never used them.

Living in Colorado we normally lose about 20% of the vehicles power and also don't get as good gas mileage as someone at sea level, Turbos and hybrids seem to be less affected than normal vehicles. The glove box is allot smaller then the RX400h. The center console is deeper if you include the hidden section and has more room.

That is great to hear. I saw it when it was debut at Lexus event...
Great... anyone else?

My Rx400h is about 26-28mpg but when my teenage son drives it... it is
22-23mpg... it tells one not to drive like a normal car or a teenager...

Hi Everybody. Thanks for all the input.  To clarify:
I am in fact, the original owner of the car, it will be two years old this August, and it has never even been door dinged.  The paint just flakes, mostly on the drivers door, right at the edge,  and turns orange in spots all over the car, which will come out if I buff it with the polish, and the stone chips happen easily, and are rusting a fair bit. I will continue to follow up on this with Lexus, and in fact have complained to them numerous times in the last year and a half.
Thanks for the info!
Danielle

Nope, have a 2007 400h with the factory paint sealer.  No problems at all.

Hi all. I have a 2007 Lexus 400RXH in white, and am experiencing some problems
with the paint. It seems to chip and flake very easily, and hence rust, and also
all over the car are small little rust spots happening starting even where
nothing has chipped. Lexus told me this was normal, and I need to buff the car
with a special buffing agent to remove them.  This has  been happening since I
got the car, and Lexus tells me that the front bits of rust are due to stone
chips hitting the car and again it is normal and not warrantied.
As the car isn't even two years old, and is lightly driven, it doesn't seem
right to me.
I would love to hear from other Lexus 400RXH owners if they have experienced
anything like this..
Thanks,
Danielle

Hi Everybody - thanks for all the responses! I should clarify a couple things
--  I don't live near the ocean, I am in Toronto.  Which, of course, means lots
of snow and therefore salting of the streets.  But... I was out of the country
for most of this last winter, and the car was parked during that time.  I use
enviornmentally friendly blue stuff on my driveway when there is ice, not salt,
so I don't think salt is the issue. As well, many of these little orange spots
started in the summer when there was no salt.
I definitely am going to keep talking with Lexus, because this just doesn't seem
right.  And.. I really HATE being shoved off to the side and told that something
isn't a problem when it obviously is.
Other than this issue, I really love the car.
Thanks for all the ideas! I really appreciate it.

Hi Danielle:

We have a 2006 Lexus RX 400h in "Crystal White" purchased new in June
2005 so it is almost 4 years old. It is garaged other than when we are
driving and we have kept the mileage to just over 30,000 miles in four
years. So, our car has been lightly used and our experience may not be
applicable.

Nonetheless, we have seen nothing like you have described and if your
claims are literal, this would be completely unacceptable. As in all
modern cars, paint is much more complex than simply the color of the
car. In particular, metallic paint such as on the Lexus consists of
multiple layers of pigment, additives that make it sparkle and give it
an iridescent appearance and finally a clear coat. Even if there was
mechanical damage to the paint, the top layer is clear. So, although a
chip such as might be caused by a stone is unavoidable, flaking is
inexplicable.

Rust! How could a car that can not be more than four years old and you
claim is only two years old rust? Modern cars don't rust until they
are ... well, when was the last time you saw a rust on a modern
car ... other than yours? Not to mention, the parts of your car that
may be stone chipped are not made of metal ... other than the hood,
the entire front of the RX is plastic.

Danielle, your experience with a two year-old Lexus is so atypical
that I must ask you to consider the following:

1. Are you the original owner of this car or did you buy it used and
did the previous owner abuse the car?

2. Was the car damaged that would require bodywork, including
repainting?

We had a very bad "door ding" that buckled the sheet metal on a rear
door, cracked the pain and exposed bare metal. Insurance paid for most
of the repair, but it took a week at a Lexus-approved repair shop and
the cost would have been almost $2,000. Almost 2 years later and there
is still no visible evidence that these repairs were done and the
appearance of the door is indistinguishable from the rest of the car.

I'm wondering whether your car has had bodywork done by a less
thorough process?
Regards,

Peter

i have a 2006 rx400h too in white that i bought used from a lexus dealer and
i am also seeing like a flaking of the paint though it has not peeled yet.

i have not seen any of those small rust spots that you are seeing though I
installed a bug deflector to prevent chip marks in the hood. Attached is a
picture of this bug deflector. A bit pricey but it protects the hood and
makes the RX look sharp!

Bought this at:
http://www.lexpartsworld.com/scripts/prodList.asp?ModelId=180&modelyear=2006
&idCategory=38

I would understand the dealer saying the chipped paint not being covered coz
it could have been caused by flying stones. But the flaking paint is
different especially if its not in the hood - it could be a defect in the
paint process of the car.

Something sounds very fishy! Be careful how you proceed with this but a 2 year old car does not rust all over just like that.
Of course the dealer will tell you it's normal, why would they want to fix it for free (under warranty) and them assume all liability afterward? The problem is that if you get it painted all over, make sure it's well documented at the dealer (and get paper copy) so that future buyers will not think you were trying to hide an accident.
I have a 2008 (16 months old) and do not have a spec on it although I use to commute to work.

Thanks.

No similar experience. Yes of course I have picked up a few dings from stone chips in the front, but I wax the car regularly and there is no rust. Also picked up the usual parking lot dings, but no rust.

Perhaps you live in a salty (near salt water) environment or in a northern environment where they use a lot of salt on the road - but the bodies of cars are warranted for about 8 years (by Federal Law I think). In neither case should you be seeing significant amounts of rust.

I'd complain larger and louder to the dealer and get Lexus HQ involved. Can't say how severe your problem is without photos but the dealer's response is nonsense.

Subject: paint issues

Hi all. I have a 2007 Lexus 400RXH in white, and am experiencing some problems with the paint. It seems to chip and flake very easily, and hence rust, and also all over the car are small little rust spots happening starting even where nothing has chipped. Lexus told me this was normal, and I need to buff the car with a special buffing agent to remove them.  This has  been happening since I got the car, and Lexus tells me that the front bits of rust are due to stone chips hitting the car and again it is normal and not warrantied.
As the car isn't even two years old, and is lightly driven, it doesn't seem right to me.
I would love to hear from other Lexus 400RXH owners if they have experienced anything like this..
Thanks,
Danielle

I have not had any paint problems on either of my RX400h's. If your dealer won't help you find another dealer or call Lexus and complain.
