Arizona hybrid drivers, please read - HOV Access!   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #883 of 1492 |
Folks,

The wording in the Energy Bill allows for unrestricted hybrid
vehicle access of federally funded HOV lanes, but the DMV has yet to
act on the law (SB 1429 45th legislature). PLEASE contact your
senator/representatives and ask them to build a fire under the DMV!
I have sent the following to my representatives, feel free to
plagerize:

Representative <your rep here>:

On 4/20/01 SB1429 (in the 45th legislature session) was signed into
law, the gist of the law being to allow qualifying hybrid vehicles
unrestricted use of the HOV lane, regardless of how many people were
in the vehicle. The wording included "Requires ADOT to obtain
approval from the federal government for allowing hybrid vehicles to
use the HOV lane without regard to the number of occupants. The
authority of hybrid vehicles to use the HOV lane is conditioned upon
this approval.". This approval has indeed been granted in the form
of the Energy Bill passed in September of 2005. The Department of
Motor Vehicles now needs to create a process for making the proper
plates/stickers available to owners of qualifying hybrid technology
vehicles. As your constituent, I am asking for your assistance in
reminding the DMV to act upon this law in a timely manner, and to
promote cleaner air through this incentive for people to embrace
alternative fuel technologies. If I may be of any assistance in
furthering this process, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

<you name and contact info here>

This is the only way the DMV will get it in gear and adhere to the
law. BTW, I have also been in contact with the AGs office about
enforcement of this law. Tired of being stuck in traffic while SUVs
with empty propane tanks roar by in the HOV? Let's get it done!

Why should a 28 mpg SUV hybrid be allowed, but a 40mpg Focus or Matrix is forbidden? I disagree with that notion. It seems bas-backwards. Also, I grow tired...

... No such thing as a 40 mpg Focus or Matrix. The best Matrix EPA est is 36 mpg; the best EPA est on a Focus is 35 mpg. Gotta keep the group credible by...

Not all hybrids shut-off (like when the battery is low, the engine continues running). Vice-versa, not all non-hybrids continue idling (thanks to an auto-stop...
