Regarding Trucks and SUV's that do not have full hybrid engines and transmissions: There is a technical reason for this. When I read the warranty for my Honda Civic Hybrid, I was surprised to see that the warranty would be voided if I put a hitch on the car. But after thinking about it, I concluded that the CVT might have difficulty handling the extra load. I know that Honda must have spent an exceptionally large amount of time tuning the CVT transmission so that it would be efficient. The introduction of an extra 2000 lbs of load would be a serious problem for efficiency, not to mention premature wear on the pullies.
With regard to plug-in hybrids: I'm totally for it. We need to make sure the auto manufactures realize that this is a desired feature.
Finally, stop dissing the Ford Escape. According to Ford's website, it is rated by the EPA for 36 city, 31 highway. Well let me tell you something, during the winter months I am lucky if I can get 37 mpg with my civic hybrid. Are you suggesting that I shouldn't recieve my tax incentive because I live in the north?
And, what's wrong with swapping out a 15 mpg SUV for a 35 mpg SUV? It sounds to me that what you really want to do is enforce a lifestyle (YOUR lifestyle), not reduce dependence on foreign oil or increase the gas mileage of ALL VEHICLES, including SUV's.
