Hi Amy!
I am the owner of two hybrids - a 2003 Honda Insight and a 2006 Toyota
Prius. As per today I will recommend anybody to get any of these cars.
The Honda is super efficient and super reliable, even for interstate
trips with an impressive fuel comsumption of 55 mpg. I a big city like
Miami with heavy traffic the average sometimes is below 50 mpg but
still much more than you can get from any other commuting / small
models. After three years I have vivited the service just for
periodical maintenece that is vital for the well perfomance of the car.
The Prius has an excellent level of comfort and excellent reliability
with a really good average of fuel comsuption close to 48 mpg in the
city and close to 50 on the higway. This car is really on the peak of
the technology on the mass produced hybrid cars, being the only one
that can be easily driven totally on electric mode (The 2006 Honda
Civic also has that feature but requires more expertise from the
driver) The first trip I had on my Prius was for 4,000 miles and in
total I spend $ 180,00 in gas - soft ride, good response and excellent
efficiency. If you have a family of two adults and two kids this might
be an excellent option ( If you like the GPS tech I recommend anybody
to get it in this car, it works incredibly and the screen resolution
is impecable)
The other options on the market are good choices too, however I will
give my preference to the ones developed by the Japanese companies
just because they have been testing and producing these cars for a
longer time than our american fellows - I hope this looong e-mail will
help you with your decision. If you have any specific questions about
the models I own feel free to ask :)
Good luck
